When is New Student Orientation?
Domestic Undergraduate Students: All new domestic undergraduate students (non CCPA students) are required to attend the New Student Orientation (NSO) during the summer months, with dates available from the end of May to early August. You’ll receive an email with registration details after submitting your Enrollment Deposit, and you can choose between attending in-person or via Zoom. Students only need to attend one orientation session.
International Students (Undergraduate & Graduate): All new international students, both undergraduate and graduate, are required to attend the in-person New Student Orientation (NSO) at the end of August, just before classes begin. This orientation is designed to help international students adjust to campus life and provides resources specifically for their needs. You will receive an email with registration information but should only sign up once you have secured your student visa.
Transfer Students: We highly encourage transfer students to attend the New Student Orientation (NSO), as it provides an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the campus, available resources, and services. You will receive an email with registration information for the Transfer Orientation. Both in-person and Zoom options will be offered in July.
Where is New Student Orientation?
New Student Orientation (NSO) is held at the Chicago campus. Check-in will take place at 430 S. Michigan Ave. Additional details, including the specific timing of the orientation, will be sent to you via email.
Can I bring my parents or guests to NSO?
Due to limited space and the purpose of New Student Orientation, parents and supporters are not encouraged to attend. The orientation is designed to provide a comfortable environment for new students to connect with one another, meet fellow classmates, and focus on getting acclimated to campus life without distractions. We encourage students to fully engage with their peers during this time. However, parents and supporters are welcome to enjoy light refreshments, grab helpful resources, take a campus tour, and chat with staff from departments across campus in our Parent and Supporters Lounge during each in-person orientation event.
Additional opportunities for parent and supporter involvement will be available throughout the summer. Be sure to visit the Ready, Set, Roosevelt site or the Parent Portal for updates and announcements about upcoming programs and events.
What should I expect during Orientation?
- Connect with Academic Advising: First-semester freshmen are registered for fall courses by Academic Advising, based on their declared major and ACT/SAT or placement test scores. Freshmen will receive their fall class schedule during orientation. Transfer students should meet with Academic Advising to review transfer credits and complete course registration. All students will be assigned an academic advisor after attending orientation.
- Meet Financial Aid: You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the Financial Aid office and meet with representatives to go over your financial aid package and answer any questions you have about payments, scholarships, and loans, and provide assistance with any financial concerns you may have.
- Meet Your Orientation Leader: You’ll be introduced to an Orientation Leader who will guide you throughout the event. They’ll be a helpful resource, answer your questions, and provide support as you navigate your first days on campus.
- Campus Tour: You’ll take a guided tour of the campus, where you'll become familiar with key locations like classrooms, dining halls, libraries, student centers, and other important facilities. This will help you feel more confident navigating the campus once classes begin.
- Learn About Resources and Support: You'll be introduced to various student resources, such as academic support services, counseling and health services, career development, and student organizations. You’ll also learn about important policies and systems that will help you succeed during your time at school.
Orientation is designed to help you feel prepared, supported, and connected as you start your college journey.
Is there parking by RU?
If you are driving to campus, we recommend that you park in the Grant Park South underground lot, which is just steps away from campus. We will provide parking validation stickers at check-in that will give you a $15 daily rate. Please bring your parking ticket with you when you check in for our event, and make sure to have your validation sticker when you exit the garage at the end of the day so that you can get the $15 rate.
How do I access campus via public transportation?
CTA Trains: If you are taking a CTA train to campus, the Adams/Wabash stop is just a couple of blocks north of campus and is serviced by the Green, Brown, Orange, Purple, and Pink lines. Our campus is also close to the CTA Red and Blue Line at the Jackson station. Both stations are walking distance from campus! Learn more about CTA passes, an economical option.
Metra Trains: If you are traveling from outside of the city, the Metra offers train service to downtown via Union Station, Ogilvie Station, and in some cases, Millennium Station. Learn more about Metra train schedules and make your travel plans.
