Alyssa Louise Geonanga: Merging Academic Excellence with Hands-On Experience in the Master of Science in Accounting Program
Alyssa Louise Geonanga is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Accounting (MSA), a program that allows her to merge academic excellence with hands-on experience in the field. As a graduate assistant in the Heller College of Business (HCB), she has the opportunity to work directly with faculty and students, further enriching the learning environment while deepening her understanding of accounting principles.
Her decision to pursue accounting was driven by its stability and credibility as a career path. Recognizing the profession’s critical role in financial transparency and business operations, she was drawn to its structured approach and the rigorous qualifications required to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). The challenge of mastering complex financial concepts, coupled with the high standards set by the AICPA, reinforced her determination to excel in the field.
Alyssa has developed a well-rounded background in finance and accounting through her diverse professional experiences. As a current tax intern at Brown CPA Group, she applies her academic knowledge and directly applies her coursework from ACCT 456 (Federal Taxation) to real-world tax planning and compliance, deepening her expertise in individual, partnership and corporate taxation. This real-world experience allows her to bridge theory with practice and prepares her for the responsibilities of a future CPA.
Previously, as a credit analyst at Wintrust, she honed her financial analysis skills by evaluating risk, interpreting financial statements and supporting strategic credit decisions. Her role as an Investor Services Apprentice at Charles Schwab further broadened her understanding of financial markets, investment strategies and client relations, which strengthened her ability to navigate wealth management and financial advising. With this dynamic experience across taxation, credit analysis and investment services, Alyssa has cultivated a strong foundation that prepares her for a successful career.
Beyond academics, Alyssa actively engages in professional development and networking. She serves as an ambassador for ThinkChicago by World Business Chicago and is involved in organizations such as AICPA, ALPFA, NABA and Ascend Midwest Chapter. These affiliations have helped her connect with industry professionals and peers, emphasizing the importance of networking in shaping her career trajectory.
Alyssa is incredibly grateful for the support and guidance she has received from the professors and mentors whose expertise and mentorship have played a crucial role in her academic and professional journey. She also extends her gratitude to her advisors and Career Services staff for providing invaluable resources and opportunities that have helped navigate her professional path.
The accounting industry is evolving with technology and artificial intelligence. Alyssa’s diverse experience and strong academic foundation prepare her to adapt to these changes. As the profession advances, her ability to leverage innovation and analytics will position her as a future leader in the field.
