Guidance on Using AI Tools at Roosevelt University

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are becoming a regular part of how we learn, work, and communicate. Roosevelt University encourages students to use these tools ethically, effectively, and responsibly throughout their academic journey.

Follow Your Professors’ Instructions

Your professor determines whether and how AI tools may be used in their class. Always follow their guidance. If you’re unsure, ask. Using AI tools in ways that contradict faculty instructions may be considered academic misconduct and could result in disciplinary action.

Roosevelt’s Preferred AI Platform: Copilot Chat

If your instructor has allowed the use of AI, Microsoft Copilot Chat is the university’s preferred AI platform. Copilot Chat runs on Microsoft’s secure, privacy-focused systems. It is safe to use with Roosevelt-related data.

To access Copilot Chat:

  • Check your Microsoft apps list.
  • Or visit copilot.microsoft.com and sign in with your Roosevelt credentials.

Using Other AI Tools? Read This First

If you choose to use other AI tools, take extra precautions—especially when working with Roosevelt-related information.

Protect Data Privacy

Do not enter the following into any AI tool:

  • Personal information (e.g., names, ID numbers, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical or financial data)
  • Confidential university data (e.g., internal reports, research, financial records)
  • Unpublished academic content (e.g., exams, assignments, or research not yet released)

When Using Any AI Tools:

Be Transparent About AI Use

  • AI tools can make mistakes or produce biased or inaccurate content.
  • You are responsible for anything AI helps you create.
  • Always review, fact-check, and revise AI-generated content before submitting it.

Use AI Responsibly

  • Use AI to support—not replace—your own work.
  • Be alert to bias or misinformation in AI responses.
  • Use AI thoughtfully. Roosevelt supports sustainability and discourages wasteful use of computing resources.

Learn more: The Student Guide to AI

Roosevelt recommends the Student Guide to Artificial Intelligence created by Elon University. It’s a helpful resource for learning how to use AI in your studies, provided your faculty has approved the use of AI in their course.

The guide covers:

  • Responsible AI Use: Use AI to support your thinking, not replace it. Always double-check AI-generated content and give credit when appropriate.
  • Skill Development: Learn to write effective prompts and use AI ethically. Continue building human skills like creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.
  • Career Preparation: Use AI to build projects and gain hands-on experience. Showcase your skills with a portfolio of AI-assisted work.
