Cybersecurity Tips

We're here to help you get oriented with the many technologies and tools that are available to you here at RU. If you ever need more assistance, check out our help desk for self-service articles or to open a support ticket.

Help protect yourself — and our entire Roosevelt community — from the scams we see often throughout the academic year.

Your awareness is one of our strongest defenses. Review these common threats and the simple steps to stay safe.

  1. Protect your password
Roosevelt’s IT team will never ask you for your password or verification code via text, phone, or email. Anyone who asks is up to no good.
  2. Avoid gift card scams
Scammers may pretend they are a friend or a supervisor, ask you to buy gift cards, and then send them the codes. Don’t reply — it’s a scam.
  3. Don’t fall for fake job offers
If you didn’t apply for a job (including informal ones like babysitting or dog sitting), or they ask you to pay money up front, it’s not real. Check the company’s official site to verify job postings. All job opportunities at Roosevelt will be listed on Handshake.
  4. Keep your email account safe
We will never ask if you want to “keep your account active.” Ignore and delete these messages.
  5. Watch out for phishing
Phishing tries to trick you into clicking links or opening files. If it demands urgent action, it’s probably fake. Forward it to spam@roosevelt.edu or use Outlook’s “Report Phishing” button.
  6. Beware of fake invoices
Unexpected bills or receipts may carry malware or try to steal your credentials. Don’t click links or open attachments.
  7. Don’t fall for financial aid scams
    • Emails must come from a @roosevelt.edu address — we will never contact you from a gmail.com address.
    • Roosevelt will never send you to a Google form for passwords or sensitive information.
    • We will never ask for verification codes by text, email, or phone.
