The Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate at Roosevelt University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Stephen Buckman as associate professor and the Gerald W. Fogelson Chair in Real Estate effective this August. In this tenure-track role, Dr. Buckman will teach real estate courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, conduct research in the real estate field and provide mentorship to program participants. Additionally, he will engage with industry professionals to ensure that the Marshall Bennett Institute’s programs address the contemporary needs of the commercial real estate industry. Dr. Buckman will succeed Tom Hamilton, who had served in the role since 2014. 

Stephen Buckman earned his bachelor of arts from the Evergreen State College in 1996; a master of public administration from Syracuse University in 2001; a master of arts in Urban Geography (also from Syracuse) in 2002; and a doctor of philosophy in Urban Geography from Arizona State University in 2013. Since earning his doctorate, he has served as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning at the University of Michigan; an assistant professor of urban & regional planning at the University of South Florida; and an associate professor of real estate development at Clemson University. While at Clemson, Dr. Buckman earned a Fulbright Scholarship and worked as a visiting researcher at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

“This presents a great opportunity for me from both a personal and professional level,” he says. “On a personal level, after spending years in the deep South, it brings me closer to family and places me in one of the most vibrant cities not only in the U.S. but the world. On a professional level—with issues of financial and social equity close to my heart—I am excited to now teach at a program and a university that not only prepare its students to be successful real estate professionals but also to be successful citizens. The opportunity to teach in a city like Chicago is amazing because the Institute and Roosevelt are smack in the middle of a vibrant real estate laboratory that is an amazing asset for the students and teachers alike. It cannot be overstated how lucky we are.”
